Very often we become across people with problems of the eyelids. They suffer from bagginess in the lower eyelid area and excess skin in the upper eyelid area. Such conditions can be cured by Blepharoplasty or Eyelid Surgery. Although it is mainly performed for cosmetic reasons,it is also used for improving the vision of people with sagging upper eyelids which sometimes obstructs the vision. It is not useful in case the patient is suffering from crow’s feet, facial wrinkles or dark circles under the eyes. Eyelid Surgery is carried out on an extensive level in various cities.
When should you consider undergoing a surgery ?
As we age, our skin loses elasticity. As a result, we can see various changes in our body-excess skin can collect on the upper and the lower eyelids. This leads to wrinkling and bulging of the upper and lower eyelid area. Very often we can see an extra fold of skin hanging over the upper eyelid. It often causes an obstruction in the vision.
Can you opt for the surgery?
Sure, if you are in good health and expect realistic results. It is usually required in people who are 35 or above. If the condition runs in the family, a person might opt for the surgery sooner. Eyelid surgery will rectify the problem but will not be able to do anything about your facial features. While the results of upper eyelid surgery last for five to seven years, lower eyelid surgery will seldom be required again.
Cost of the treatment
Blepharoplasty cost may vary with the clinic chosen. It will also commensurate with the professional expertise and the years of experience the surgeon has. Although the exact figures may vary, it will roughly cost in the range of Rs.30000 to Rs.75000.
Preparation for the surgery
You will need someone to assist you after the surgery as you will have to live with bandaged eyes for some time. Of course, you will have to take leave from the office and perform a limited set of activities for some time. You might experience dry eyes for some time after the surgery. Ice packs, ice cubes, small gauze pads, eye drops, clean towels, and painkillers must be kept handy for your use. One should consume the painkillers prescribed by the doctor. It is advisable to not to consume Aspirin, Naproxen, and Motrin as they might increase the risk of bleeding.
The surgery in detail
After administering a local anesthesia and an oral sedative, the surgery is initiated. If both the lids are required to be rectified, the upper lids are handled first. The surgeon cuts the eyelids and removes the excess fat from the area. The cuts are closed with very small stitches. The lower lids may be rectified by using a CO2 laser or cutting along the lash line. In either case, the cuts lines are so fine that they are hardly visible and fade out after some time.
Recovery
Post surgery, both the eyelids will be covered since they will have stitches. The bandages will be removed after a minimum of 1 week. You might experience some bruising and swelling but the eyelids return to normal after a week or a fortnight. One needs to be careful about the medicines and the instructions given by the surgeon, otherwise, the eyelids may suffer from bleeding or infection. It is common to experience dry eyes or a pulled down lower lid after the surgery. An abnormal coloring of the eyelids or a loss of vision may also be experienced in rare cases.
